Game #13: A's 3, Rangers 5
April 16, 2006 | A's vs. Texas
Heartbreaker.
It had to happen sometime. Street disappoints. And on his bobblehead day to boot!
I was just saying the other day, one of these games Huston Street is going to implode. Actually, I don't think this is it just yet. I think Street could do worse -- sorry, had to put that out there! -- as amazing as he is, he isn't perfect and one of these days he's simply not going to be able to do the job. Was this the day? Today was tolerable. It's early enough in the season and there was nothing embarrassing about how the game was played.
I am terribly disappointed that Danny Haren, my favorite pitcher, had an awesome start that didn't result in a win. I read some quotes from Haren after the game and he was very gracious about not blaming Bradley for the Rangers' run in the 8th or Huston's losing the game. Dan Haren: a legend in the making.

Also of note:
- Jay Payton ejected! You know how rare it is for an A to get ejected from a game? The last time I recall was Mark Kotsay late in the season last year against the Angels, I think. Otherwise, I don't remember ever knowing about one of our players getting ejected. Where do I look this up?
- Chavy remains hot. Four hits and all three RBIs of the game.
- Adam Melhuse enters the game as a pinch hitter and gets on base on a walk. You know, I really like how dependable this guy is. Despite his infrequent starts or appearances in games, Melhuse delivers the goods. Thumbs up!

Well, my beautiful girlfriend is now 0-3. I think I may have blown this game for her though. I thought to myself right before the 9th, wow, FINALLY, a game we go to together and they win! Jinx.
Okay, so I bought four tickets behind the Rangers dugout so the "family" could catch the game. Suzanne's never sat this close and I wanted her and her son to have a great experience. We get there early, get our bobble heads. I pick up my little brother's FREE A's tickets and 2006 year book (a total of $70 in value) for being a kid's club member (one of the A's best promotions) and the game starts.
I've never seen so many foul ball outs. Haren is perfect through 3 and then Swisher makes a great play on a hard grounder. The kind of play that one thinks a pitcher needs in order to have a no-hitter. Then, bam! I did it again! Haren gives up his first hit.
Then we score, they score on the line drive off the glove over the fence thing that causes me to cuss in front of children. I sit and steam and then wonder, how are those plays NOT errors? I mean, if it stayed in the park, they'd have called it in error, right? Why mess up my guy's ERA on a ball that bounces over the fence?!?
Anways, the ninth comes and we lose. I look at the 8 and 9 year olds I've brought. They're sad but still happy in that kid way. I remind myself we always suck in April and come August we'll go on some 26-6 run.
We start heading over to line up so the kids can run the bases. Only the kids can't run the bases today because the A's have canceled, citing the weather. Sandor, Suzanne's son, plays for Walnut Creek Little League and they cancel games for the week if it rains on Monday. Jeff plays for Antioch Little League and they play in the mud. The sky is perfect and the sun is out but the kids can't run the bases on Easter Sunday. So we leave and go to Antioch so the boys can have fun.
Like them, the season is young and full of hope....right?
Very nice account of how your day at the park went. Thanks! Some thoughts:
- Don't blame yourself or Suzanne for the losses. The A's *do* suck in April; we have figures to prove it. But next time, try to get seats in section 115+. Stop sitting behind the visitor dugout, okay? :)
- I heard the Bradley play on the radio, then saw it with my own eyes on Baseball Tonight. Nah, that was definitely not an error. I think the official scorer made the right call on that, even if it cost my crush Haren on the ERA.
- Is the Street bobblehead as unrecognizable as all the other bobbleheads ever produced for the A's? Please tell me they got his tongue sticking out, that's the least they could do.
- Oh, to be a kid who's "sad but still happy" when the A's lose. Oh, to never grow up and never give a hoot about the starter's win-loss record and his ERA.
