Game #40: A's 7, Mariners 2

May 17, 2006 | A's vs. Seattle

Jinxes broken for everyone! We begin anew. The A's have a three-game win streak. The bats are coming alive. It is now safe to return to the Coliseum.

• Good Zito shows up on the mound. Cy Young-form Zito. May Zito.

• Even though both teams had two errors, I feel like the A's are defensively superior to the Mariners.

Postscript (5/18/2006):

• I noticed that Jason Kendall was wearing gloves during one of his at-bats. Huh. Kendall's infamous for not wearing gloves when he goes to bat. I wonder what's changed.

• As a Catholic, I was extremely pleased to see Huston Street make the sign of the cross when he got to the mound to close. I hadn't seen him do this in a while and I was worried that life in the big leagues was, you know, corrupting him.

(Game experience: KYCY while driving home, Action 36 when I got home.)

A's record: 20-19 | streak: W-3 | well-A-meter: 3

Woo hoo, Celeste has officially broken her jinx -- just one day after I broke mine! Now neither of us can blame ourselves for bringing down our team :-)

Sounded like a nice tidy win, except for the messy relief work in the 8th inning.

And now we're in a tie with the Rangers for the AL West lead!

Yeah, my sister broke her jinx last night as well .... Does anyone remember exactly what happened around the 7th or 8th inning, where (I think) the bases were loaded, Kielty hit a grounder to 2nd, and somehow the 2nd baseman had to choose whom to try to run down -- Payton between 3rd and home and Kielty between 1st and 2nd? Why is it that Payton is always involved in the strangest plays of the game? -- Dave

I got to the ballpark without (gasp!) my scorebook, and quickly remedied that by buying one of the programs and a souvenir A's(tm) pencil. Whew!

As for what happened with those weird plays, not sure what to tell you. First, there's an error that allows 2 runs to score. (Wha? Huh?) Then, suddenly there's a rundown going on between 1st and 2nd. But then the 2nd baseman(?) with the ball, runs across the mound towards Payton, who is poised between 3rd and home and ready to run if the 1st-2nd rundown resolves itself. Suddenly (too late) Payton realizes that THE GUY RUNNING TOWARDS HIM HAS THE BALL (he was clearly the only one in the stadium who did not know this), panics, and is thrown out. Watching the Mariner (sorry can't remember who it was now) cross the entire infield was like watching a train wreck in slo-mo. Ugh!

So, my take at the answer to your question, Dave: because he's not very heads-up.

Thanks for the eyewitness report, Celeste.

When the play happened I was, unfortunately, on the phone and it would've been too rude of me to say, "Could you hold on a sec? I really have to turn the TV sound back up and watch this instant replay."

I'm curious: how much did you pay for the A's progam and pencil? Last year at that park where the Giants play it cost a dollar for a pencil and 50 cents for a cardstock scoresheet.
