Game #70: A's 5, Dodgers 2
June 18, 2006 | A's vs. Los Angeles
The A's have won 10 games in a row! It's a season-high streak not just for the A's, but for any team in the major leagues. Hmm, the All-Star Break is still three weeks away. But if the A's are going to amass victories even before the second half begins, I'll take it.• Joe Blanton nearly pitched another complete game. He looked good! I think it's cool he got the win over Aaron Sele even if Sele is already at the beginning of a decline. Blanton got two Dodgers on base in the 9th and no outs so Macha brings in Huston Street. To get his 17th save, Street gets Jeff Kent to hit the ball directly to Mike Rouse (more on Rouse later). Ha ha! I don't like Jeff Kent, shown here being choked by Barry Bonds.
• Bobby Kielty's triple brought the A's score to five runs. And Kielty also made a great throw from right field to Bobby Crosby to get an out.
• Marco Scutaro plays third base as Chavy DH-es. And as usual Scoot calls attention to himself by going 3-for-4, with one run and an RBI. I think it was Scoot's foul ball that went to the left field seats and lodged itself into a fan's cowbell. TV announcer Glen Kuiper gushed over it and the cameras showed the fan unsuccessfully trying to get the ball out. It even made Baseball Tonight's Web Gems.
• Mike Rouse. Who is this guy? He's so new he doesn't have a player card on ESPN.com. He made an impressive leaping catch in the 9th. And he's cute, too!
• Nomar Garciaparra has the only HR of the game. He currently leads the NL in batting average. But I can only feel sorry for the guy. I think it's tragic that after spending a decade with the Red Sox, he gets traded two months before Boston wins the World Series. If it were me, I'd need more than Mia Hamm and a consolation WS ring to make me feel better.

Wella, where DO you find these pictures? Kyle and I first started laughing at your meanie shot about Kent. And then Kielty?!?! Kyle sez, "I'm likin' the Highlander shot of Ronnie Mac!" [pink]Nice biceps, baby. Mmm mmm good.[/pink] (Blogger wouldn't let me class the color, sorry.)
Believe it or not, the Kielty photo was taken by Barry Zito!
I've hidden these stash of pictures for myself for a long time, but Tanner Boyle had been slowly leaking them on the blog. Barry Zito is not only a singer/songwriter and actor, he's also a photographer.
Laugh your head off!
tsk tsk, wella. So, you don't like Jeff Kent because he inspired Barry Bonds to choke him? That makes him more likeable in my book. It was a pretty excellent blowup as far as those go, almost reminiscent of the Billy Martin/Reggie Jackson blowouts.
ranking the Jeff Kent action however, I believe that his Bonds dust-up is a solid number two, his number one being his dust-up with a motorcycle--he broke his wrist on a bike and then proceeded to lie about it for weeks--even though people had seen him on his bike.
After all of this great Jeff Kent stuff, we'd be remiss in mentioning the flap with Milton Bradley--though that ranks solidly last. Is he a racist redneck? probably. Have the gnats had any success after he left? No. He's better than Ray Durham. I was secretly hoping that we'd have picked him up when Ellis' future was in doubt and we needed a RH bat last year (before the big (and always) hurt.)
It might have just been speculation, the discussion of Beane's interest, but I have to admit that as a hitter, he would have been great in our lineup. His defense would have been a definite minus. I think Slusser is right (in her column today) that Beane has picked up guys that are undervalued because of their alleged "character issues." It was hard to see Andre Either with his .299 average come in to town, while Milton sits in the dugout wearing white shades and nursing a shoulder that he apparently hurt in a temper tantrum before the dog-ers series. Oh, yeah, and "happily married" Sauerbeck. Wasn't that a great homer that he served up to Chavez in Cleveland? We should have waited and someone else in the AL would have picked him up--but instead, we grabbed him for $186k. But, I hear Wolffe and Beane are at the world cup, so we can't read too much into that move, aside from the kids being at the wheel.
I suppose what we see next is Dmitri/Delmon Young in the white shoes. We could do worse, certainly.
Is Darryl Strawberry available?
Gooden?
Actually we agree that Jeff Kent is a liar and that is the #1 reason I don't like him.
That is an interesting point Susan Slusser made at the end of her article. But I think it's more that Sauerbeck came so cheaply. The out-of-pocket expense for the A's is even less than what you'd pay for a rookie.
Thanks for all your good and entertaining points, Brendan. I'm still wishing that Milton Bradley will pay off for the A's.
