Game #137: A's 1, Rangers 8
September 4, 2006 | A's vs. Texas
We can't win every game, that's what I told myself all afternoon.A strange game with Rangers rookie outfielder Nelson Cruz going three-for-four, two runs, and five RBI. And he had an exciting inside-the-park home run, in part thanks to Jay Payton. Poor Jay Pay missed Cruz's fly ball as well as two other plays in the game. And it wasn't all his fault; Zito walked three in the first inning! Texas scored first and never stopped. The A's stranded 12.
At one point, the TV broadcast showed Billy Beane sitting in the stands. Somewhere right behind home plate. If Beane wasn't throwing chairs around, then we don't need to.
Maybe we'll win tomorrow when I go to the Coliseum again.

A's record: 79-58 | streak: L-1 | well-A-meter: 4.90

I'm on the road in Cinci and had the pleasure of watching a darn good game of baseball between the Reds and the Giants last night. Tight scoring (1-1, 2-2, 4-2, 4-4, 5-4 Giants win in 10!), Barry's #730, all on a downright nice night in Cinci.
The fans here are...calm. Polite. In spite of the fact that they sell beer directly to you from vendors (no churros, no ice cream, but beer and peanuts come by every 5 minutes), no one got rowdy. A bleacher fan threw back one of the Giants' home runs and didn't get ejected from the park. No one said peep to me in spite of being in a Giants visor. How civilized! Now if only I could find a vegetable that isn't fried or iceberg lettuce.
It was also a bit odd seeing Hatteburg and Harang on the field (and to a lesser degree, Aurilia). Wait a minute...didn't I used to root for you guys? I was definitely impressed by Freel, the Reds' lead-off hitter. Does a great job in the spot.
I anxiously watched the out of town scoreboard and frantically flipped through my previous game records (yes, hauled my scorebook Cinci with me) to decipher the pitchers' names...Zito, Calero, (missed Flores), Witasick. Ach, sorry boys!
Great report! Thanks, Celeste. Are Cincinnati fans older? Why would they be so calm?
Hatteberg is the one A's player (at the time) that I would've wanted to invite over for dinner.
I was also a fan of Harang when he came up. I once thought of bringing a sign to the Coliseum for one of his starts that would say, "Harang 'em high" but he might've given up a lot of home runs so I didn't do it.
You actually wore a Giants visor?
