Game #115: A's 0, Rangers 14
I take it back! I don't mind one-run games!
It slipped my mind that we had a day game today. When I found out the score, my jaw dropped.
And that's not all:
* Brad Halsey gave up three runs and got sent down. In case anyone has forgotten, Halsey has been my crush these last few weeks. But I read that he'll be back after a couple of starts in the minors.
* Milton Bradley got ejected. What is up with all these ejections? This is so un-A's-like. And I don't want Bradley haters to jump all over him for this.
* Three errors by the A's!
* Zito gave up 11 hits!
* Jay Witasick returns and hurts his ankle again or something. This is the type of guy who should get the incentive-laden contract like what Frank Thomas has. At this rate, Witasick should be giving each fan $5 back. Just kidding. He has a 16.20 ERA, that's a joke enough.
The worst shut-out loss ever at the Coliseum.
(Game experience: None)
A's record: 62-52 | streak: L-1 | well-A-meter: 3

The bright side of blow out losses like this is the top of the bullpen (Duchscherer, Calero and Street) get the entire day off. They don't even have to bother warming up, which is often overlooked drain on a reliever's arm. The 1997 Giants lost many lobsided contest like this one while winning a lot of one run games. At the end of the season, they gave up more runs than they scored. But they won the NL West that year.
Hit the Napa Town & Country Fair. When I parked the car, it was 1-0 and Zito seemed shaky but holding his own. I was stunned to get home and see the final score.
Generalchiang is right on. There's another OK side (if not bright side) to a blowout. There are so many "little" plays on which a close game can turn, and young players sometimes dwell on "If only I'd been playing 2 steps to the right" or "If only I'd left at the crack of the bat instead of hesitating to see if the ball would be caught." When it's 14-0, none of the little things will haunt anyone except Macha and BB. :)
Thanks for pointing these out to me, guys.
Guess it's the pessimist in me (after all, I'm the daughter of the Prophetess of Doom), but even though the A's are 3 games ahead of the Angels -- who got shut out last night as well -- every loss at this point sends me reeling. I know it's statistically improbable for the A's to win every game from here on out. I don't want a repeat of 2004 when one lousy game can make a huge difference between going to the playoffs and going home.
Plus, I haven't forgotten that we had the rained out game to make up for.
Am I being too much of Nervous Nellie to fret about such things? That's Macha's job, right?
