Great Baseball Names

Everyone knows baseball has produced some great names. The Mop Up Duty blog has put out their list of favorites.

At least three former or current A's are on there: Catfish Hunter, Rollie Fingers, and Milton Bradley.

What? No Kiko Calero?

The name Wally Whitehurst, who played for the Mets in the 90's, is a favorite of mine. That name just reeks of baseball to me. If I were to write a baseball screenplay, I don't think I could name anyone better than Wally Whitehurst.

Shooty Babbit, who played second base for the A's in the 80's, is my favorite unusual name.

My favorite nickname has always been Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd who pitched for the Red Sox. One year in spring training, "The Can" had a dispute with a Flordia video store owner about an unpaid bill. So the video store owner leaked a list of softcore porno VHS tapes that Boyd had rented from him to the media. The press immediately named the list "The Can's Film Festival".
