ALDS Game #3: A's 8, Twins 3
October 6, 2006 | A's vs. Minnesota
WE CLINCH GAME THREE!I just came out of a meeting. I just found out the A's won.
They did it! They ended the losing streak.
We're going to the ALCS!
How did this happen? No, I mean, literally. How did this happen? I was at a meeting...
Al answers:
With the score 4-2 in the 7th, with 2 outs, the Twins INTENTIONALLY WALK Frank Thomas. Then they walk Chavy. Then Morneau bobbles a grounder that should have been the third out. Then Swisher gets behind in the count 1-2 and works the pitcher for a walk to force in a run. And Scutaro drops a line drive about 18 inches fair down the right field line to score 3. Game over.

I am in NYC babysitting my niece for the weekend. Juliet didn't go to sleep until 7:30pm (Eastern). I put a few things away and was about to fire up my brother's overpowered TV set when my phone vibrates. It's a text message from Kyle: "Woohoo! Sweep, baby!" By the time I found ESPN amonst my brother's thousands (no exaggeration) of channels, they are talking about college football and gearing up for the Yankees game. Blast!
Then my co-babysitter arrives. She is a Bosox fan, meaning she is also rooting for the Yankees to die a horrible death. We return to the TV, only to find that some vague recording function now prevents us from seeing live television. Damn and blast! We settle for watching play-by-play on MLB's GameCast doohickey. Go Tigers!!!
So Al got to watch it on TV, Tanner was there in person, and Celeste was foiled simply by being in enemy territory.
Wow, I don't know what to say! I thought I'd feel more triumphant or exultant or something -- but for some reason I didn't even feel anxious yesterday. I was quietly confident that the A's would win the series.
Now it's either the Tigers or the Yankees! I'm rooting for the Tigers (not because I think it's a better matchup for the A's), but because I hate the Yankees and their overblown hype.
Oh, hey, Wella, since we didn't need our Saturday ALDS tix, I'll be tearing up that check you wrote me! ;-)
